Wellness Coaching For Academic Success

Life happens and many things can get in the way of doing your best at UF. Balancing school assignments, the academic calendar, and all of the other commitments on your schedule can leave you feeling overloaded and disorganized.  You may struggle finding time to do things you need to stay well and feel your best - like eating well, being active, managing stress or getting enough sleep.

GatorWell’s free wellness coaching program for UF students can help if you would like to improve one or more of the following areas:

  • Stress management and relaxation strategies
  • Time management and organization
  • Sleep habits
  • Eating habits and exercise
  • Study skills

Wellness coaches are professional health educators who will help you set priorities and identify specific changes you want to make in the next 4 to 8 weeks to improve your academic performance. During your sessions your coach will help you:

  • Identify one or more priority areas that you would like to change.
  • Recognize benefits of creating new, positive habits.
  • Identify barriers to performing at your best and come up with manageable solutions.
  • Create an action plan that incorporates realistic strategies tailored to your busy schedule.
  • Successfully implement your plan by providing accountability, problem-solving, skill-building and referral to other campus resources if needed.

HIV Counseling and Testing

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people aged 13-24 accounted for an estimated 26% of all new HIV infections in the US in 2010. Almost 60% of youth with HIV in the US do not know they are infected. If not treated, HIV can lead to a fatal condition known as AIDS.  In order to help our students protect themselves and others against this potentially deadly virus, GatorWell offers FREE confidential HIV counseling and testing at the GatorWell main office to UF students by appointment. Schedule an appointment using the request button below, calling the GatorWell Office at 352-273-4450 or emailing GatorWell directly at gatorwell@ufl.edu. We will work hard to find a time that works best for your schedule.

GatorWell uses an oral mouth swab test called OraSure® to test for HIV. We do not draw blood. The most common type of HIV Test, and the test GatorWell uses, detects the antibodies produced by the body after HIV infection. Generally, it can take up to three months for HIV antibodies to develop in the human body at a level in which the HIV test can detect. This is called the "Window Period". If there was a possible exposure (no condom used, condom break, etc.) in the last three months before the day of a HIV test, the HIV test will not account for that exposure. Test results will be available IN PERSON two weeks from the date of the initial visit.

***A note about the 'Window Period': The most common type of HIV Test, and the test GatorWell uses, detects the antibodies produced by the body after HIV infection. Generally, it can take up to three months for HIV antibodies to develop in the human body at a level in which the HIV test can detect. This is called the "Window Period". If there was a possible exposure (no condom used, condom break, etc.) in the last three months before the day of a HIV test, the HIV test will not account for that exposure.*****

Initial Visit: During the first visit a health educator will discuss details of the process and take a mouth swab (non-blood) sample for testing. The sample will be sent to the Florida Bureau of Laboratories in Jacksonville and test results will be available IN PERSON two weeks from the date of the initial visit. At minimum this visit will take 20 minutes. However, we encourage students to bring any questions they have about HIV specifically, sexual health in general (other STIs, contraception options, etc.) and/or navigating healthy relationships. You can also pick up FREE condoms (external/male and internal/female), lube and/or dental damns at this time. At the conclusion of this appointment, you can make a follow up appointment to obtain your results in person.

Follow up visit: At the follow up visit the student will obtain their results in person (required). At minimum this visit will take no more than 5 minutes, however this is a good opportunity to ask the health educator any questions that may have come to mind after the initial visit or any sexual health questions in general.
